Try-On: Nasty Gal

I’ve always wanted to start one of these styles of posts on a blog and what couldn’t be a better time? I like clothes, that’s not a secret. I’ve always loved shopping for clothes. When I was younger I was much more conscious of the money I was spending because it wasn’t my money. I was spending the money that my parents made. But as I am living on my own and making my own money, I have to say that my wallet is definitely experiencing this change. But don’t get me wrong, I am not living beyond my means. When I moved out to New York, I knew that I would have to keep a strict budget but luckily for me, I still find room in my budget to spend on the things I want. In this case I’ve allocated a good chunk of my earnings on clothing.

But anyways, let’s get of the topic of my financial state and let’s dig in! Back in August I placed an order on Nasty Gal and I am here to review them with some pictures of the pieces on. And before you read on, I will let you know that these are my honest opinions and they will always be.

Item 1: Button V-Neck Ribbed Sweater

Let’s get straight to the point. This sweater had a weird smell right out of the packaging. I can’t place my finger on it, but it is not what I want my clothes to smell like upon receiving it. Especially because this is a sweater and you really shouldn’t give it an intense wash, I already wasn’t too excited about trying it on. However, I tried it on despite the smell and I again wasn’t impressed; this sweater did nothing for me. It looked frumpy and gave no shape. The sweater is pretty stretchy and was not tight, but it looked tight. The fabric around the buttons was pulling and maybe an exaggeration, but looked like I was about to hulk out of the sweater. It’s a big no-no for me when it comes to buttoned clothing. Sometimes the item isn’t tight, but the fabric appears to be pulling and just isn’t flattering. Another miss is that the fabric is kinda itchy. Simple as that; not much to explain. I don’t think anyone wants to itch all over the place so that’s that. Lastly, the quality of the sweater is not great either. On a hanger, the fabric around the buttons pull on its own, the ribbing is not straight, and the edges have an unfinished and unrefined fraying. Verdict: I do not recommend this sweater. (P.S. I managed to find the sweater with the same name, but with close inspection, it doesn’t look like the exact sweater I bought. Maybe it’s an updated version)

Item 2: Tan Utility Shorts

When I saw these shorts on NastyGal.com I loved them. I wanted to buy them immediately and when I placed my order, I remember tracking my order every day. I tried them on and I was a little unenthused. They weren’t bad, but they just weren’t as cool as I remembered them. I think the fabric is the biggest reason why I didn’t like them too much. The fabric is stretchy and similar to the sweater, the shorts were not tight, but because of the fabric composition, they pulled near the crotch/hip area making it appear tight. Another thing is that I wished the back of the shorts had a bit more detail. The back of the shorts have nothing, not even a pocket. And maybe because there’s no back detail, the shorts kinda make you look like you have no butt; they just flatten your backside. The last point here is that the belt is a very cool, grungy addition, but it doesn’t really work like normal belts do. There’s no way to fasten it. Regular belts have the hole to keep it fastened at that degree of tightness, but with this belt, you pull to tighten, but after you let go it just loosens again. The model tied the belt in a particular way which might ‘fasten’ it, but I admittedly didn’t try that option. Verdict: Given my above review, it looks like I would not recommend, but I’ll say this: the style of these shorts are pretty cool and given the price point, some people may want to buy them to try out a pair of non-basic shorts. If I were to keep these shorts, I think I would like them in a slightly bigger size to not have that pulling look, but I’m at a point in my closet where I don’t need any more new clothes. I should focus on cultivating my closet to pieces I absolutely love and this is not a piece that I need in my closet.

Item 3: Rose Print Wrap Skirt

Being in New York, I see all these people being a bit more daring with their sense of style and although a wrap skirt is not that ‘out-there,’ it is daring for me. I saw this on the site and thought now would be a perfect time to try out a style that I’ve never tried before. First things first, because this is a wrap skirt, it can fit almost anybody. You can wrap and tie the skirt to whatever size so it’ll fit you, no need to wonder if you’re this size or that size. I tried it on with high hopes, but unfortunately, this skirt is not for me. There’s something about it that didn’t suit my body. I think it made me look bigger than I am and the length was not flattering on me either (which at 5′ 3″, I kinda knew anyhow). Verdict: The fabric is decent, but I think this skirt would be for someone taller.

Thanks for tuning into my first try on haul! Unfortunately none of the items worked out, but that’s the reality of shopping. Especially with online shopping, it’s hard to get a gauge of the item’s quality and fabric, but that’s why I want to start a consistent posting of try on hauls; to share my experience and maybe help whoever is reading decide if they want to spend their money on these pieces.
